Logan Lynn’s “My Movie Star” Reviewed in Current Issue of Peach ATL Magazine

Check out the My Movie Star album review on page 15 in the new issue of Peach ATL Magazine, out this week on the streets of Atlanta!

🍑

From Peach ATL Magazine: (1/15/19)

“Nine albums into his recording career, Logan Lynn’s ‘My Movie Star’ is easily his most ambitious project to date. The oversized package consists of the 10-song album on the first disc and a second disc of remixes as well as other artists covering a few songs from My Movie Star. With the exception of the title cut, the songs, co-produced by Lynn and Jay Mohr (yes, that Jay Mohr!), were co-written by Lynn and piano sensation Glasys. In other words, this album is a new and unexpected direction for Lynn, who is perhaps best known for his electronic music stylings. Among the cover versions on the second disc, the rendition of “Big City Now” by Tiffany (yes, that Tiffany!), is a must.”

“My Movie Star” Has Been Out For Exactly Three Months…

We are 3 months into the My Movie Star release and it’s clear that people either completely love this weird, quiet piano record and are already mid-process wearing out the vinyl, or they fuckin’ hate it and either refuse to listen or just never made it past song 5 before breaking the vinyl over their knee.

There doesn’t seem to be much in-between this round, both critically and commercially, which I’m good with. Love me or hate me, feature the album or ignore it, these songs are my best work in 20 years, hands down.

I’m so proud of this record, all thanks to everyone who gave everything they had to this project; And to those of you who have bought the album and followed me here, I know we are a long way from those strange dance floors where we first met. The world has changed and so have I. Thank you for still being here. I see you dancing, sweethearts.

The My Movie Star Deluxe Double Disc Edition is out now on vinyl, CD and digital download wherever music is streamed and sold. Pick one up from Bandcamp and I’ll sign it for you, personalize it for a friend, or turn it into a unique piece of hatemail for someone you would like to simply torture with my voice

Feature Story and New Interview with Logan Lynn in November Issue of Starry Constellation Magazine

Thanks to Starry Constellation Magazine for interviewing me for their current issue. We talked about music, Hollywood, recovery, men and so much more. Check out the online version HERE, or just keep reading below for the full transcript.

From Starry Constellation Magazine: (11/9/18)

Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) This answer has really changed a lot over the years. When I started out in the late 90’s I was all about this ‘Putting the Disco back into Discomfort’ tagline, which was evident in both my music and behavior at the time. The electronic period that followed was also a time in my career where I was signed to a major label and several indies, so I had other people describing my sound a lot, trying to help “shape” my sound, all of that bullshit. Ever since breaking out on my own again I’ve felt really free to do whatever the hell I want, work with whoever I choose, and follow creative whims that have taken me down a bunch of different sonic paths that I honestly never would have been allowed to go down if I were still making records for other people. So, people know me as this electronic emotional dance pop dude because that’s what my records were from 1998-2012. My last album was just full-on college rock — an homage to all of the bands and songs that actually shaped me — and that led to this very stripped down, intimate situation I find myself in currently. Jesus, that was a long way of saying “piano pop.” [laughs] Read the rest of this entry »

WATCH: Logan Lynn’s “Beside You” Music Video Here First

Today we released a video for Beside You, track 7 on My Movie Star.

The song, like the entire record, features my very talented collaborator GLASYS on keys and backing vocals and was produced by me and Jay Mohr, engineered by Mike Blackburn, mixed and mastered by Justin Phelps, and recorded at The Hallowed Halls in Portland.

New song, new face. Watch Beside You here first:

The Release Week Reviews Are In…

My new record My Movie Star has been out for exactly one week today and I’m so touched by the response so far.

Releasing an album with no beats (and ultimately nothing to hide my vocals/lyrics/feelings behind — something I’ve been doing to my songs for exactly 20 years) has been equal parts terrifying and gratifying.

It took me months to feel comfortable with anyone hearing me this way, and there have been times during the process (and this week) where I have felt that same discomfort…but by the time we go on tour in April, I plan to be able to sing these songs in front of all of you without bursting into tears. Or maybe I’ll just stand there on stage and cry into the microphone like I used to. Time will tell!

Listen and buy My Movie Star on Bandcamp, iTunes , Amazon, Google Play, CD Baby and everywhere else music is streamed and sold.

Check out a bit of what people have been saying below!

Portland’s Logan Lynn’s Long-Awaited New Album My Movie Star Now Available

Singer/songwriter Logan Lynn is back and musing on life, love, and the pitfalls of Hollywood stardom in his new album, “My Movie Star,” released on October 12th.

Produced by actor/comedian Jay Mohr, the album features collaborations with The Dandy WarholsGLASYS, and DoublePlusGood, as well as 80s pop phenom Tiffany, Australian pop star Jarryd JamesRian Lewis and many more.

This toned-down album takes Lynn in an entirely new direction from his dance-centric previous work. Lynn wrote the songs for the album on the Steinway piano in his living room, streaming the initial writing sessions live for his social media followers. The original lineup featured 19 new songs; together with Mohr, Lynn pared it down to 10 original songs. The 2-disc double album, recorded at The Hallowed Halls in Portland, Oregon will also feature several collaborative remixes and covers.Mohr, who Lynn credits as inspiration for the album, has truly put himself out there for the production of the album – not only writing two of the songs, but also by stirring up huge media buzz by baring it all in an outdoor shower in the video for “Nothing’s Ever Wrong.” Says Mohr about the song, “Logan Lynn is a brilliant artist. The best in a generation at harnessing raw emotion. On ‘Nothing’s Ever Wrong,” he let’s just enough of them get loose from their harness, the exact amount that will knock you on your ass.

You don’t realize how stripped down and bare bones the recording is because of its power.  Just Logan and his piano sharing glimpses of his deepest bruises. Beautiful shards of his pain, it’s pretty overwhelming to hear someone sharing what most keep locked away. It’s humbling.”

In that song, as well as others such as “Big City Now” and “Underground,” Lynn weaves a poignant theme of vulnerability and the desire for approval. He intended the album to be about the inner lives of the people he knows and loves. This is a thematic departure from his previous album, ADEIU, which explored the world of mental health and recovery.

As a suicide survivor, Lynn has become a vocal mental health advocate, talking openly about his journey in hopes of giving strength to others and removing the stigma surrounding mental health issues. He’s worked with various mental health initiatives, as well as partnered with other celebrities and artists such as Alice Cooper, Kevin Bacon, and Portugal. The Man to help provide education and outreach for those who need assistance.

Billboard Premieres New Logan Lynn Record Featuring Tiffany, The Dandy Warhols, Jarryd James and More

On Friday Billboard premiered Portland, Oregon-based indie pop musician Logan Lynn’s 9th studio record, My Movie Star alongside a new interview about the project, review of the album, and new music video. Read the whole article here.

The 20 song, 2 disc My Movie Star LP was co-produced by Logan Lynn and actor / comedian Jay Mohr (Saturday Night Live, Jerry Maguire) and features collaborations with 80s pop icon Tiffany (I Think We’re Alone Now), alternative rock gods The Dandy Warhols, Australian neo-soul king Jarryd James and dozens of other bands, artists and producers.

In their review of the new album, Billboard writes “For nearly 20 years, dance-pop artist Logan Lynn has made a career out of crafting catchy, disorderly songs that almost all include big beats, fun melodies and cheeky lyrics. But on his latest album, My Movie Star, Lynn has traded in his signature sound for a more somber, melancholy tone — a dynamic new album consisting of Lynn’s new piano-driven songs and filled with remixes and covers by other industry greats.”

Self-Titled Magazine calls Logan Lynn’s My Movie Star “his most intimate work yet…so spare and spellbinding it threatens to stop time entirely. Or at the very least, force you to put that mobile device down and actually listen.” while Innocent Words Magazine writes “Logan Lynn is a modern day Gene Kelly.”

The album is available now on deluxe edition double CD, vinyl and digital download wherever music is streamed and sold. Lynn, who just wrapped up a summer tour raising awareness about mental health on the road with fellow Portland rockers Portugal. The Man, will be touring the U.S. in support of My Movie Star this spring.

Logan Lynn Talks Working with Tiffany, Mixing Advocacy Into His Music, New Album ‘My Movie Star’

For nearly 20 years, dance-pop artist Logan Lynn has made a career out of crafting catchy, disorderly songs that almost all include big beats, fun melodies and cheeky lyrics. But on his latest album, My Movie Star, Lynn has traded in his signature sound for a more somber, melancholy tone.

The record consists almost entirely of songs featuring only Lynn’s voice and a piano, a major departure from his dance-pop roots. Lynn credits his collaborator on this record, comedian Jay Mohr, for this new sound. “I have a history of making rambunctious dance music, along with the occasional acoustic versions,” he tells Billboard. “He felt like I should explore being quiet. I would send him little clips of the piano songs I was writing in my loft in Portland, and he would give me feedback.”

Mohr wasn’t the only person helping to create a dynamic new album — My Movie Star is a double album, the first half consisting of Lynn’s new piano-driven songs, and the second half filled with remixes and covers of the new music by other industry greats, including 80s pop icon Tiffany, indie rock darlings The Dandy Warhols and many more.

Logan Lynn talked to Billboard about getting to work with his “idol” Tiffany, his work in advocacy for LGBTQ issues and mental health, and the creation of My Movie Star.

Let’s start by talking about your video for “Nothing’s Ever Wrong.” What was the inspiration behind the concept for the video and song? Read the rest of this entry »
