Portugal. The Man and Logan Lynn Interview About Music and Mental Health on KOIN 6 CBS News

Thanks to KOIN 6 CBS News for taking the time to chat with us about what we’re all up to at these Portugal. The Man shows this summer! Click HERE to check it out on KOIN or keep reading below for the full transcript and video segment.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Grammy winners and Portland’s own Portugal. The Man are helping to bring mental health awareness to the forefront at some of their concerts — including their recent sold-out shows at Edgefield.

Portugal. The Man hit it big with their song “Feel It Still,” and they’re using their popularity to do more than just entertain the masses.

“Mental health is just a subject that’s very close to us personally,” Zach Carothers, the band’s bassist, said.

KOIN 6 News met up with Carothers and keyboard player Kyle O’Quin before their Edgefield concerts on Aug. 24 and 25 to talk about a new campaign featured at their Oregon shows.

Concertgoers will see the “Keep Oregon Well” vans and volunteers at their performances — talking about mental health.

“There’s always kind of been a shame about it where you’re sad or not good on the inside,” Carothers said. “And that’s just recently coming out that that’s absolutely ridiculous. People need to take care of themselves.”

“Keep Oregon Well” was co-founded by fellow Portland-based musician Logan Lynn. It’s designed to reduce stigma surrounding mental and behavioral health.

“I think the more people who stand up and say, ‘This is my truth. I’m just like you, you’re not alone,’ that chips away at stigma each time,” Lynn said.

Lynn has been working with well-known musicians for years to give people access to mental health help through concerts.

He said, “I thought about, what would I have needed when I was 7 or 12 and struggling. It wasn’t listening to the adults in my life. It wasn’t listening to folks that could have guided me into services, but I was listening to Debbie Gibson and Paula Abdul, Milli Vanilli.”

This is the first time “Keep Oregon Well” has toured with a band. Portugal. The Man has two more Oregon shows this week — one in Jacksonville on Thursday and the final one Friday in Bend.

Portugal. The Man said Lynn’s mission is a perfect fit for them.

“Have you ever met this guy? Logan is great,” Carothers said.

O’Quin added, “He’s great because he’s open about talking about things and that’s what we’re trying to do.”

Logan Lynn and Portugal. The Man Take Over Britt Festival in Jacksonville!

I drove the RoadTrek from Portland to Jacksonville, Oregon with Pretty Baby and Keep Oregon Well Resilience Consultant Caitlin Young in tow yesterday so we could wake up in town today for the big show. That was SO much fun, Britt Festival! Holy shit.

Portugal. The Man have been taking me to Satanic rock church every single night on this magical tour, friends — and they’re making all of my big dreams for the world come true while they do it. Actual heroes, every last one of them.

We’ll see you again tomorrow night in Bend!

A Man, His Dog and the Road…

Thanks for all the sweet messages over the past week since I announced I would be heading out on this new adventure! Many of you have asked what my next steps are, so here goes:

I bought a 2018 RoadTrek Simplicity SRT (pictured) that Pretty Baby and I picked up in Las Vegas this weekend, and now will be on the road for the foreseeable future, occasionally picking up GLASYS, Matt Alber and others to drive around with us, playing shows all over the country.

10 years ago a big piece of my recovery from alcohol and cocaine was locking myself in the house where I could be safe — and I have essentially been locked in here ever since (unless you paid me to leave). It has served me well in many ways, but it’s time to lock myself outside for a little while. See you soon, friends with driveways, outdoor power and water hookups!

I’m going to spend the next couple of months at the ocean while we book shows and get the record out. If you want us to come sing songs in your city, EMAIL US with your favorite venue and we’ll do our best to come see you. 🙂

XOXO
Logan

Feature Story on Logan Lynn and Portugal. The Man on Northwest Music Scene this Week!

Thank you to the folks at Northwest Music Scene for the feature story this week on our upcoming tour with Portugal. The Man! Check it out HERE, or keep reading below.

From Northwest Music Scene: (8/1/18)

Portland-based indie rockers Portugal. The Man are teaming up with Keep Oregon Well and its co-founder Logan Lynn to advocate for mental health awareness throughout Oregon.

Lynn, who co-founded the campaign in 2014, agreed that mental health needs to be discussed more openly to help break the stigma surrounding it. “As a suicide survivor myself, I know how important not feeling isolated is,” he said in a statement. “Stigma exists because people have been made to feel like mental and behavioral health challenges are personal character flaws, versus being like any other medical condition. If you break your arm tomorrow, would you feel shame?”

Lynn made clear that in all he does, he has only one end point in mind: “I won’t stop doing this work until every last bit of the shame that prevents people like me from seeking help in the first place, is gone.”

Below is the full list of dates:

Aug. 24th — Portland, Oregon (McMenimans Edgefield)
Aug. 25th — Portland, Oregon (McMenimans Edgefield)
Aug. 30th — Jacksonville, Oregon (Britt Pavilion)
Aug. 31st — Bend, Oregon (Les Schwab Amphitheater)

Portugal. The Man Advocate For Mental Health Awareness At Oregon Tour Stops: Exclusive

Portland-based indie rockers Portugal. The Man have been touring steadily since the release of last year’s Woodstock, which housed the record-breaking hit “Feel It Still.” But they have something special planned for its handful of homecoming shows in Oregon this summer: the band has partnered with public advocacy campaign Keep Oregon Well and its co-founder, musician Logan Lynn, to help raise awareness for mental health.

“Mental Health is personal for our whole band,” PTM frontman John Gourley said in a statement. “As touring musicians, self-care can quickly become make it or break it on the road.” Gourley added that the goal of partnering with Lynn and the Keep Oregon Well street team at their shows is to inspire their fans to make mental healthy a priority, too.

Lynn, who co-founded the campaign in 2014 along with Trillium Group CEO Kim Scott, agreed that mental health needs to be discussed more openly to help break the stigma surrounding it.

Today (July 12), Lynn’s new album is available for pre-order; Portugal. The Man’s Oregon tour dates kick off Aug. 24. View the full list of shows below.
